Pirates

I am Edward Teach (Draft)
I am Edward Teach, Blackbeard; I say I am the King of the Sea!
I run the “Queen Anna’s Revenge”, my lady!
I’m ragged and mean…if looks could kill I’d have no crew.
I am on fire as people would say!
I run this town.
I take ships with little effort; they see me as a threat!
I owe my success to my educator, Hornigold.
I ran the “Golden Age of Piracy”…but sadly it ended too soon!
I am Blackbeard my legend lives on…
I am taught I am sought!
I fought the best I know and sailed from here to there.
I am proud to say I am Blackbeard…strong, ugly, greedy and mean!

I am Edward Teach
I am Edward Teach, Blackbeard; I say I am the King of my sea!
I run the “Queen Anna’s Revenge” my lady! Whom I murdered to hide my booty.
I’m ragged and mean…if looks could kill I’d have no crew.
I’m fiery! My beard smokes as I roar my orders.
I am feared by those who don’t know me, yet my crew knows to admire me.
I run this town. Bath is mine and so is Charleston.
I take ships with little effort; they see me as a threat!
I owe my success to my educator, Hornigold.
I ran the “Golden Age of Piracy”…but sadly it ended too short! Off with my head…
I am Blackbeard my legend lives on…
I am taught!
I am sought!
I fought the best I know and sailed the Atlantic going port to port capturing ship after ship.
I am proud to say I am Blackbeard…strapping, hideous, greedy and callous!

Pirates Internet Workshop:
As I completed the internet workshop on pirates I never really knew that information could differ from site to site. As I completed the DRC and answered the questions I noticed that the information was similar yet very different. The question about how Buccaneers got their names I found many different variations. On one site they said they were named after knives used by natives on Hispanola. Then on another site its said they received their name from boucanier meaning “someone who makes smoke”. I never thought information could vary. Yet, through this experience I have realized that web sites can have different information about a subject. I realized that Wikipedia is not an accurate source of information but through the website I searched today through the internet workshop I came to see that educational web sites may vary. I liked seeing all the different sites. There were all different from set up, pictures and to information. I enjoyed surfing through the sites to find the information provided yet I could not seem to find information about authors. I looked for bibliography and found a few on some sites.

Pirate Diary: The Journal Of Jake Carpenter
First off let me say…the illustrations are AWESOME! As I read this book it really helped me to see some of the things that Jake described. The journal was so well written that you could visualize most of the things he wrote about but the illustrations really brought this book the life! I found this to be an enjoyable read. It took you through a life of a young pirate and told of his mishaps. At times I felt really sorry for Jake as he wondered through his time as a pirate. He lost his uncle who he assumed would be dead after the horrible captain threw him off the ship. I found it amazing how the pirates treated the sailors better than the original captain of the “Greyhound”. I would have thought that the pirates would have treated them as servants but instead accepted them into piracy. The diary gives accounts of hard times as well as enjoyable times on the “Greyhound” for Jake. I am still intrigued to find that the pirates seemed to be better people than those who were on the ship before it was seized.

What If you met A Pirate:
“He’d be swinging a cutlass and clutching a dagger. He’d have pistols hanging all over him….a peg leg and an eye path.” Is that what you think a pirate would look like if you ever met one? Well, sorry to kill you imagination. That is how the movies portray pirates but in actuality pirates were plan dressers and looked as if they were common sailors. In fact they actually were just sailors. Pirates work was long, hard, dirty, tiresome and dangerous. When we think of pirates we think of l large luxuries ships. Granted they did sail around in ships. These ships were small. Why small ships, you wonder. Pirates were not just uneducated sailors they were smart and tricky. They truly didn’t want to fight! Pirates used small ships that could hide in inlets so at night they could bombard large ships. Smaller ships were faster and easier to steer. “Pirates were packed into small boats like dogs in a kennel.” Pirates worked hard to keep the ship going. They would change sails depending on the weather. They would change or add sails depending on the wind speed and direction. It was constant work getting that ship to sail. A night half of the crew would sleep and the other would work. Also, everyone took their turn at the pump pumping water out of the deepest part of the ship. Sailing had to be done like a well oiled machine. No one could take the day off…all hands on deck!! There are many jobs on a pirate’s ship; bosun was the man who kept thing in working condition, the master was the navigator he would get his leads from the leadsman who would call out the depth of the sea. Jack O’ the Dust and Jemmy Duck were the men who kept the workers going. They served the meals and kept the rats away from the food. Sails keep the sail clean and hole free. Cooper makes barrels to hold items, sparks was a blacksmith, 2chips were the carpenter and guns was the gunner. The ship runs like a small town. Everyone has a job. So you want to know what happened to those pirate? There was a new for secure sea lanes which meant no pirates. The large nations of the world in the 1800’s decided to hunt down and hang pirates. But do not fret Lads pirates still exist in the 21st century.

Pirate Diary: The Journal of Jake Carpenter
| “Ship’s biscuits (which everyone calls bread) are as hard as nails. When I first bit into my biscuit, I discovered a dozen little white worms that had made tunnels into it. Abraham held me. “Eat the in the dark. Or if you cannot wait until nightfall, tap them on the deck. This knocks the worms from their homes.” Pg. 15 | Ugh! I can’t imagine biting into a piece of bread and worms come out. I found this certain passage as disturbing because it shows the filth. Not only is it filth on a ship it is also unhealthy. I cannot fathom that eating worms could be healthy. Although it did not say what kind of worms they were. I know that some worms are good in protein but when I think white worms I think of maggots. Just being away from family is bad enough but having to eat food that is full of bugs. It is if it’s an insult to injury. |
| “They are common thieves. Had we not joined them they would have murdered every one of us, yes, as easily as you or I would cut the head off a fish.” Pg. 23 | I read in my research that pirates didn’t go looking for fights. They may not have killed the men on the ship but may have taken them as prisoners. I don’t know why Bart spoke so bitterly about the pirates because they were treating the sailors better than their captain. They may be thieves but they have morals. |
| “Cannot say I am sorry to leave New Providence behind. Some cherish the island as a pirates’ paradise, but I shall best remember the stench of the place and the rats (which surely outnumbered the people).” Pg. 47 | This just shows that Jake doesn’t like the pirate life. Most pirates enjoy New Providence but Jake is glad to leave. He has also left to be pardon this is another example that he doesn’t want or like the pirate life. I believe it was a good experience for Jake but I do think he will never return to the life of piracy. |
What if you met a Pirate?
| “Plunder, the stuff pirates stole, was not all silver and gold.” Well, what was the “treasure” or “booty”? | Pirates did plundered gold and jewels but that is not al. They also collected sugar, spices, food, cloth, indigo, tea/coffee, ivory, rum/wine, and gun powder/guns. Also, some pirates smuggled “blackbirds” which were illegally imported slaves. |
| How did pirates attack? | People believe pirates to be dumb criminals but the fact is they were actually pretty bright. Pirates knew how to outwit others. For example, pirates would switch out their flags from pirate flags to a flag of a peaceful nation. Some pirates even dressed up as children and women to fool other ships. They also would attack at night in smaller vessels. Pirates seemed to know how to work the system. |
| Do pirates still exist today or are they a thing of the past? | Pirates still exist today in the modern world but are not truly seen as a threat. They exist near poor countries that don’t have the defense to fight them. The pirates discussed in “What if you met a Pirate? Are long gone. Pirates back then die of many diseases, die in battles or were killed due to laws established by governments. |

The food was GROSS! Who knew how poorly pirate ate. Was it really worth it to be a pirate? Ugh, just wait until you read what Peter and his friends were served in Peter and the Starcatchers. You would think that if pirates were profitable, they could eat a little bit better!

I had the same feeling when I read the passage about eating the ship’s biscuits with the worms. I don’t care how dark it was when I ate it, I think I would still be thinking about the worms!! I know that I couldn’t have survived the life of a pirate. The living conditions, the hard work, and the food would have done me in!!
